It came from over 70 years of ideological, technical, and philosophical conflict about what thinking even is, and how to mechanize it. Movements and careers came and went. Basically the entire human race rejected the truth, chased red herrings for decades, and finally gave them up only when there was no way left to reject the truth.

AI is not unique this way. The World Wide Web, for example, followed a similar path, and whatever the next big thing is, it's simmering in labs and universities as we speak, visible only in a steady stream of papers that make a normal person think "Who cares?" Maybe you will.
